Two girls living in an internally displaced persons camp in northern Uganda
(They are sitting on top of a large ant hill)

There are so many children everywhere and they always love to have their picture taken

Gulu town in northern Uganda

How much can be loaded onto one truck??

Bicycles lined up outside of a church...no cars in the parking lot

Men and women in the camp singing and dancing

A local instrument

Food drying in the sun

Little girl pumping water to carry back to her home

This old man really wanted us to take a picture of him holding his radio

Grinding flour

So much time is consumed in just surviving and getting food and water.

The camp is one hut after another. About 6 people live in each hut.

Drying clothes

School

Writing

For school, the lesson is written on the board and then all the students copy the lesson in their book. There are no text books, desks, or chairs in this school so the students just sit on the floor.

A latrine-- there is only one for every 30-40 people

Gifts from children in Holland being distributed to the children in the resettlement schools and camps

This school has around 980 students

Teaching in a setting like this with no curriculum is difficult to say the least!

These young men were so exicted to get the sunglasses in their gift box they were dancing around and laughing

Bubbles

Girls getting their gifts

Sharing

A typical scene all throughout Sub-Saharan Africa is women roasting maize on charcoal stoves

Drying cassava

Lots of bananas, or motoke, one of the staple foods here. There are many different varieties and thankfully our family really likes bananas!
We took a recent trip outside of Kampala
It was a long drive

The school's chapel
AG loved seeing the cows

What is on my head?? Actually these hats are made from used plastic bags which are woven together to make all sorts of things. Making bead necklaces and bracelets out of paper and hats and rugs from plastic bags are some of the projects that can help widows, as well as helping the environment by reducing waste!
AG and some of her new friends (also Americans living in Uganda) having tea time
I can fly!!!!

AG playing with a lizard. She loves insects and reptiles much to her mother's dismay. She will spend hours outside talking to lizards and bugs. She likes snails and caterpillars in particular.

One of KJ's favorite activities is sucking on her toes
Mimi and Nana travelled to Uganda with us to be here during our first two weeks! What a help!!
